At a glance

Half of all adults are estimated to have raised cholesterol. Statins are a class of drugs that help lower cholesterol, by lowering cholesterol levels in the blood, to help prevent heart attacks and stroke.

Studies show that, in certain people, statins reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death from heart disease by 25-35%

Statins help to lower the level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in the blood. LDL cholesterol is frequently referred to as "bad cholesterol" as collects in the walls of your blood vessels, where it can cause blockages, resulting in a heart attack or stroke.

This service is for people who have been diagnosed with high cholesterol and have been established on a course of treatment by a GP or doctor.

It is important that cholesterol levels are considered as part of an overall assessment of your risk of cardiovascular (heart) disease, which a GP can discuss with you.

Cholesterol is a natural fat that is made by many different cells in your body, primarily by cells in the liver. Some cholesterol is necessary to keep healthy.

The two main types of cholesterol are known as HDL-cholesterol (“good cholesterol”) and LDL cholesterol (“bad cholesterol”). LDL cholesterol is involved in forming blockages in the blood vessels, while HDL cholesterol may prevent these blockages from forming.

Healthy adults should aim for:

  • total cholesterol of 5 mmol/l or below
  • LDL-cholesterol of 3 mmol/l or below
  • HDL cholesterol- 1.2 mmol/L or more
